    Workshop Overview

One Real Case, Modelled Step by Step
Urban Excavation in GTS NX 2D

Join MIDAS Academy at UTCB in Bucharest for an afternoon of hands-on training built around one real engineering case from Timișoara: a deep urban excavation in a dense built-up area, executed under strict limits on ground movements and with vulnerable buildings right at the property line.

Over four hours you will build and analyse the model yourself in MIDAS GTS NX 2D, step by step, on your own laptop.

What you will model: the FE geometry and boundary conditions, the soil stratigraphy and its constitutive model, the retaining wall and its intermediate supports — then the full construction sequence, from pile execution through staged excavation to the base slab and strut removal.

What you will look at: lateral displacements, settlements behind the wall, forces in the support system, global stability and plastic zones — and how the construction sequence itself changes the answer.

Why it matters: on this project, analysing several governing profiles and iterating on the support scheme led to a lighter, cheaper solution that still met every deformation requirement imposed for the neighbouring structures.

Don’t miss your chance to join — spaces are limited!

Three-dimensional model of the project and its surrounding buildings
The project in its urban context — excavation footprint and the neighbouring buildings it has to protect.
Layout of the retaining system over the existing urban fabric
Retaining system layout, monitoring points and the analysed profiles over the existing site plan.
    Session Highlights

What You’ll Gain From This Session

1️⃣ Model an excavation end to end

Build the model yourself: stratigraphy, retaining wall, supports and the full staged construction sequence in GTS NX 2D.

2️⃣ Control deformations, not just capacity

Read displacements, settlements and plastic zones the way a design review will read them — against the limits you were given.

    3️⃣ Optimise with confidence

See how iterating across the governing profiles trims material and cost while keeping the neighbours safe.

    Hands-On Experience

You do the work — not just watch it

Finite element mesh of the staged excavation with soil layers and retaining wall
FE model · soil layers & staged excavation
Displacement contour plot around the retaining wall
Results · displacements around the wall
    🖥️

    Build it yourself

Every participant works on their own laptop and builds the model from scratch, one guided step at a time.

    🏗️

    Real project data

Work with a real site: actual stratigraphy, real construction stages and the deformation limits imposed on the design.

    Validate your results

Learn to read the output critically and check it against what a good geotechnical engineer would expect to see.
