Join MIDAS Academy at UTCB in Bucharest for an afternoon of hands-on training built around one real engineering case from Timișoara: a deep urban excavation in a dense built-up area, executed under strict limits on ground movements and with vulnerable buildings right at the property line.
Over four hours you will build and analyse the model yourself in MIDAS GTS NX 2D, step by step, on your own laptop.
What you will model: the FE geometry and boundary conditions, the soil stratigraphy and its constitutive model, the retaining wall and its intermediate supports — then the full construction sequence, from pile execution through staged excavation to the base slab and strut removal.
What you will look at: lateral displacements, settlements behind the wall, forces in the support system, global stability and plastic zones — and how the construction sequence itself changes the answer.
Why it matters: on this project, analysing several governing profiles and iterating on the support scheme led to a lighter, cheaper solution that still met every deformation requirement imposed for the neighbouring structures.
Don’t miss your chance to join — spaces are limited!
Build the model yourself: stratigraphy, retaining wall, supports and the full staged construction sequence in GTS NX 2D.
Read displacements, settlements and plastic zones the way a design review will read them — against the limits you were given.
See how iterating across the governing profiles trims material and cost while keeping the neighbours safe.
Every participant works on their own laptop and builds the model from scratch, one guided step at a time.
Work with a real site: actual stratigraphy, real construction stages and the deformation limits imposed on the design.
Learn to read the output critically and check it against what a good geotechnical engineer would expect to see.
Ionuț Emil Iancu is structural engineer with extensive experience in the design and coordination of complex structural projects. He has contributed to the development of numerous projects across various sectors, including residential buildings, office buildings, public facilities, multi-purpose halls, swimming pools, and hospitals. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering, and his expertise focuses on reinforced concrete structures and geotechnical works, including special foundations, deep excavations, and retaining systems.
