AI Summary This session uses a real six-story project in West Java, Indonesia, to explain practical design decisions for Composite Steel Reinforced Concrete (SRC) structures beyond software analysis, including why SRC was selected, how MIDAS Gen and DESIGN+ support the workflow, how to work across ASCE 7, ACI 318, and AISC 360, and when RC column modeling can serve as an efficient, slightly conservative step before final SRC verification.

Description

This session breaks down a real design challenge from a 6-story SRC composite building project in West Java, Indonesia, one of the most seismically active regions on earth. It's a candid, practical look at how a structural engineering team worked across MIDAS Gen and MIDAS Design+, two purpose-built tools each aligned with different design codes, and developed an efficient workflow to move between them for a composite structural system. Along the way, the team also confirms an important engineering principle: the software provides the calculation, but the engineer chooses the design basis. Whether you work with composite structures, seismic design, or want to see how real engineering decisions get made on a live project, this is a case study worth watching.

Key Points

Designing an SRC (Steel Reinforced Concrete) composite moment frame for a high-seismicity building

Choosing SRC over conventional steel or reinforced concrete, and why it matters

Working with MIDAS Gen and MIDAS Design+, two tools aligned with different design codes, for a single composite structural system

Applying three governing codes, ASCE 7, ACI 318, and AISC 360, each with its own design philosophy

Developing an efficient workflow to streamline the design process across both tools

Verifying that two different modeling approaches produce consistent, reliable results

Speaker

Ir. Benjamin, M.T. President Director PT. Arah Rancang Mulia
Benjamin is the founder of PT. Arah Rancang Mulia, a structural engineering consultancy specializing in industrial facilities, highrise buildings, and complex structural systems. His professional portfolio includes the structural design of ON Space, a 22story commercial tower in BSD, Tangerang, and the Indofood BIC Packaging Division facility in Purwakarta, West Java—a threestory industrial building with a total floor area of 67,000 m². These projects demonstrate his capability in delivering efficient, codecompliant solutions for largescale and technically demanding structures. He completed his Master of Civil Engineering at Tarumanagara University in 2019, with a concentration in construction management. In 2022, he earned the professional engineer designation Ir. through the Program Profesi Insinyur (PSPPI) organized by Gadjah Mada University in collaboration with the Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia (PII), underscoring his commitment to professional excellence, engineering ethics, and continuous development within the discipline.
