Global Engineering Insights Webinar:
Rethinking Tunnel Design from a Hydraulic Perspective
    📅 May 20, 2026 (Wed)
📍Online (GotoWebinar)
🕑Slot 1 : 15:00PM (NZST)  | 10:00AM (ICT)
Slot 2 : 11:00AM (CEST) | 10:00AM (BST)
💻Duration: 60min - 90min
Session Overview

Tunnel construction is frequently referred to as a "battle against water." However, traditional design practices have largely focused on geotechnical aspects, often overlooking the groundwater conditions that govern the entire service life of the structure. This session redefines tunnels not merely as underground structures, but as integrated Hydro-Geo-Structure systems. Moving beyond the binary (drained or undrained) design approach, it introduces an advanced design framework based on the Hydraulic Convergence-Confinement Method (H-CCM) and future-oriented AI and digital twin maintenance strategies.

Learning Objectives

- Hydraulic Design Paradigm Shift :

Understand the critical importance of groundwater systems and learn an integrated approach that accounts for hydraulic behavior from the initial design stage.

- Practical Application of H-CCM :

Master a methodology that controls the equilibrium of Pressure (P) and Inflow (Q) to ensure long-term lining stability, going beyond traditional load-deformation analysis.

-Future Resilience and Maintenance :

Gain insights into using real-time sensor data and digital twins for proactive, climate-resilient tunnel maintenance and management.

Who Should Attend

- Geotechnical and tunnel engineers seeking advanced numerical modeling and design techniques.
- Infrastructure planners and engineers focusing on urban groundwater control, multi-purpose drainage systems, and environmental seepage.
- Researchers and professionals applying AI and digital twin technologies to smart infrastructure management.

Andrew Charleson specializes in two key areas: integrating structural design with architecture, as explored in Structure as Architecture (2006), and earthquake engineering from an architectural perspective. With over 30 years of experience, he focuses on translating complex technical knowledge into practical impact for real-world communities.
