This session presents strain compatibility as one general procedure for the ultimate flexural resistance of reinforced and prestressed concrete sections, and shows how to use it as an independent benchmark for MIDAS Civil section capacity results.
Using a real (anonymised) pre-tensioned composite beam assessed to the DMRB standards CS 454 and CS 455, participants will see how the method is set up, solved and reconciled against a workbook and a third-party output.
Key highlights include:
✅ Plane Sections, Material Curves, Equilibrium: One procedure that covers tendons spread over the depth, composite sections and mixed concrete grades
✅ One Unknown: Solving for the neutral axis step by step, with robust convergence checks
✅ Worked Example: Sagging and hogging resistance of a pre-tensioned beam with in-situ infill
✅ MIDAS Civil Verification Protocol: Which inputs to align and which intermediate quantities to compare before MRd
