Seismic Engineering in Practice:
Project Applications by MIDAS Users in Greece
    🕑 18:00 - 21:00
📍 Electra Palace Athens
✏️Seminar Overview

This seminar provides a structured overview of seismic design, performance assessment, and failure analysis, based on real engineering projects from Greece.

The seminar begins with the seismic design of new buildings in accordance with Eurocode 8, introducing the overall design workflow and key considerations that influence structural behaviour and design decisions. It then moves to the seismic performance assessment of existing structures, where a real case study demonstrates the application and interpretation of pushover analysis to evaluate structural capacity and vulnerabilities.

The final session presents a real bridge failure case study, examining the collapse of the Palaiopyrgos Bridge during Storm Daniel and the subsequent redesign process, highlighting lessons learned and best practices for resilient bridge engineering.

Together, these sessions offer a coherent and practice-oriented perspective on seismic engineering, covering the full spectrum from design to assessment and real-world failure investigation.

🧑‍🏫Seminar Schedule
  • Session 1: 18:00 - 19:00

Seismic Design of New Buildings per Eurocode 8 🎙️Speaker: Minoas V. Bampatsikos
📝This session introduces the seismic design workflow for new buildings in accordance with Eurocode 8, focusing on modeling principles, seismic action definition, and key design checks using MIDAS Gen.

  • Session 2: 19:00 - 20:00

Seismic Performance Assessment of Existing Structures: Push over Analysis 🎙️Speaker: Andre Mangion @Bezzina & Cole
📝Through a real case study, this session demonstrates the seismic performance assessment of existing structures, including the application and interpretation of pushover analysis to evaluate structural capacity and vulnerabilities.

  • Coffee Break
    20:00 - 20:20

    ☕ Networking with the engineers

  • Session 3: 20:20 - 21:20

Real case study: Palaiopyrgos Bridge collapse after Storm Daniel 🎙️Speaker: Ilias Chatzidimitriou & Michalis Mantziaras @Omikron Kappa Consulting S.A.
📝This session examines the failure of the Palaiopyrgos Bridge during Storm Daniel and presents the subsequent redesign process, highlighting lessons learned and best practices for resilient bridge engineering.

📝Learning Objectives

By the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:
Understand the seismic design workflow for new buildings in accordance with Eurocode 8, including modelling principles, seismic action definition, and key design checks.
Gain insight into the seismic performance assessment of existing structures, with a clear understanding of the application and interpretation of pushover analysis.
Learn how real engineering decisions are made through case-study–driven presentations, connecting theory with practical implementation.
Analyze a real bridge failure case from Greece (Palaiopyrgos Bridge collapse after Storm Daniel) and understand the causes of failure, redesign strategies, and lessons learned for resilient bridge engineering.
Develop a comprehensive view of seismic design, assessment, and failure analysis across buildings and bridge structures.
Build a strong conceptual foundation that can be directly applied in hands-on modelling and analysis workflows using MIDAS software.
