Description
The webinar opens by contrasting conventional analysis (all loads applied at once via superposition) with construction stage analysis, where the structure and loads are built up sequentially stage by stage. It then explains column shortening — differential elastic, creep, and shrinkage deformation between columns that generates additional forces in beams and slabs — and outlines the MIDAS Gen NX construction-stage workflow: defining materials and sections, linking time-dependent material properties for creep, shrinkage, and compressive strength development per Eurocode, assigning elements/boundaries/loads to construction groups, and specifying stage duration and activation/deactivation data.
The live demo builds a 13-story RC building through the Construction Stage Wizard, erecting each floor on a 7-day cycle and applying superimposed dead and live loads on realistic staggered schedules. It then defines a wind load case per Eurocode 1 (EN 1991-1-4:2005), setting terrain category, basic wind velocity, orography/directional/seasonal/turbulence factors, external pressure coefficients, and the structural factor CsCd, and generates a story-by-story wind load profile. Results reviewed include story drift and displacement with torsional irregularity (max/average) checks, and column shortening graphs that separate the creep, elastic, and shrinkage contributions to total column deformation at each story.
Key Points
Construction stage workflow: time-dependent material properties (creep, shrinkage, compressive strength) linked to materials and a staged erection sequence built story by story with realistic dead/live load timing.
Column shortening insight: dedicated result graphs decompose total column shortening into creep, elastic, and shrinkage components per story, explaining differential-shortening effects in tall buildings.
Eurocode 1 wind load definition: full wind load specification (terrain category, basic velocity, pressure and structural factors) and story-level wind force/drift results including torsional irregularity checks.
