    AI Summary

This session explores the behavior of lift joints in arch dams and their influence on stress distribution, cracking, and sliding stability. Using an FEM-based approach, it explains key arch dam mechanisms, lift joint modelling methods, and stress evaluation at critical joint elevations. The session also highlights how different loading conditions can affect joint performance and overall structural safety. Participants will gain practical insight into identifying tensile zones, assessing sliding resistance, and evaluating dam safety with realistic joint behavior.

    Description

In this session, we will present a practical approach to understanding and evaluating the behavior of lift joints in arch dams. The session begins with the fundamental structural mechanisms of arch gravity dams, explaining how water pressure, self-weight, uplift, silt, thermal effects, and seismic loads are resisted through both arch and cantilever actions.

The session will then focus on how lift joints can become critical planes for tensile cracking and sliding, especially under different loading combinations. Attendees will learn how FEM results can be interpreted to assess stress conditions at joint elevations, identify potential tension zones, and evaluate sliding stability based on cohesion, friction resistance, normal force, and driving force. The session will provide useful guidance for engineers who need to assess dam safety, joint performance, and structural stability using a realistic finite element modelling approach.

    Key Points

Arch Dam Load-Resisting MechanismsUnderstand how arch action and cantilever action work together to transfer water pressure, self-weight, uplift, and other loads to the foundation and abutments.

Lift Joint Behavior and Failure ConsiderationsExplore why horizontal construction joints can become critical planes for tensile cracking and sliding under different loading conditions.

FEM-Based Stress and Joint ModellingLearn how FEM results can be used to review arch, cantilever, and principal stresses, while representing lift joints through continuum, interface, or joint element approaches.

Sliding Stability and Dam Safety EvaluationUnderstand how cohesion, friction angle, normal force, and driving force are used to assess lift joint sliding stability and support overall dam safety assessment.
