    What You'll Take Away

Practical tips on using efficient and fast FEM tools in GTS NX

Better ways to model the dynamic effect of reservoir water on upstream slopes

Insights on how to easily analyze post-earthquake slope stability

    Description

Deep Excavations are critical components for modern urban construction such as basements, stations, foundations, subways, etc. These are supported by diaphragm walls, sheet pile walls, etc to withstand lateral earth and water pressure. Additional support members such as struts, beams are also used to resist earth pressure and prevent wall deflection.

This webinar includes theoretical background explanation for Deep Excavations. Advanced features and analysis capabilities available in Midas GTS NX catering to this application will also be explained such as Eurocode partial factors simulation in Non-Linear Construction stage analysis for an excavation, importing CAD files in the program and then creating the final model out of it, etc.

    FAQs

Tech Q1. What is the function of rigid link in construction stage analysis? Expand or Collapse
    A. Rigid Links are used in stages where interface elements have not been activated to ensure nodal connection.
Tech Q2. Can we model joints in the panels of diaphragm wall in a 3D model? Expand or Collapse
    A. Yes, the joints in the panels of diaphragm wall can be modelled using advanced elements such as interface, etc.
Tech Q3. What is the difference between elastic and rigid interfaces? Expand or Collapse
    A. To model relative behaviour between ground and structural elements, interface elements can be used. If no interface is used, it is a rigid connection. When using interface, stress transfer between elements occurs based on the stiffness of the interface element in the normal and tangential directions. Elastic interface has linear behaviour, while if nonlinearity is to be included in the interface, other nonlinear interface types such as Coulomb Friction can be used.
Tech Q4. How do we model panels and their joints in diaphragm wall? Expand or Collapse
A.The joints in the panels of diaphragm wall can be modelled using advanced elements such as interface, etc.
Tech Q5. How to use partial factor, can the factors be applied separately to structural loads? Expand or Collapse
    A. Partial factor definition is available in GTS NX based on Eurocode design approaches, and the factors can be applied to materials as well as loads. Separate load sets can be selected and factors can be applied separately to each load set.
Tech Q6. Is it possible to generate reports in construction stages? Expand or Collapse
    A. Yes, the report can be created in GTS NX for all the construction stages.
Tech Q7. Can I get tutorials for soldier pile, caisson and grout modelling in 2D? Expand or Collapse
    A. Yes, we can share the tutorials for excavation modelling.
Tech Q8. Can we extract result of deformation, shear force, and bending moment for a specific node? Expand or Collapse
    A. Yes there is a tool in post processing called ‘Extract’ using which the results at any specific node can be extracted in tabular format.
Tech Q9. How to consider pore pressure when water level is input? Expand or Collapse
    A. The pore pressure is considered automatically by the program on the basis of the defined water level.
Tech Q10. How to model bonded and unbonded length of the anchor? Expand or Collapse
    A. The bonded/ grouted and unbonded/ ungrouted length of the anchor can be input using anchor modelling wizard.
Tech Q11. Do we need to use Imprint when using anchor modelling wizard? Expand or Collapse
    A. Anchor wizard uses embedded truss elements for anchor modelling, hence nodal connection between anchors and surrounding ground mesh is automatically ensured, and imprint is not needed.
Tech Q12. What are the different drainage parameters available in the program? Expand or Collapse
    A. There are four drainage parameters available in GTS NX: Drained, Undrained (Effective Stiffness/ Effective Strength), Undrained (Effective Stiffness/ Undrained Strength), Undrained (Undrained Stiffness/ Undrained Strength).
Tech Q13. How to model multiple anchors easily? Expand or Collapse
    A. The anchor locations can be imported in the program via Excel format.
General Q1. Is this training program free of charge? Expand or Collapse
    A. Yes! The Global Geotechnical Webinar Series 2025 is completely free of charge. Once registered, you’ll get access to all live and on-demand sessions, expert talks, hands-on tasks, and learning materials — at no cost.
General Q2. How do I get the training license? Expand or Collapse
