Long-term settlement in soft ground is not only determined by the final settlement value, but also by how settlement develops over time under staged embankment loading. This session explains how consolidation behavior can be evaluated using both classical 1D Terzaghi theory and nonlinear finite element analysis.
Through practical embankment consolidation examples, participants will learn how to compare Terzaghi-based settlement prediction with FEM-based nonlinear consolidation using constitutive models such as Modified Cam Clay and Soft Soil Creep. The session also shows how secondary consolidation can be captured to better understand long-term settlement behavior after primary consolidation is complete.

Description
Soft cohesive soils continue to deform over time as excess pore water pressure dissipates and soil volume changes under sustained loading. While 1D Terzaghi consolidation provides a practical theoretical approach for estimating settlement and degree of consolidation, real ground behavior may require nonlinear analysis that considers stress history, drainage conditions, pore pressure variation, and time-dependent creep.
This session demonstrates long-term settlement evaluation for embankment construction using MIDAS SoilWorks and MIDAS GTS NX. Participants will explore staged embankment consolidation analysis, compare 1D Terzaghi and nonlinear FEM results, and understand how Modified Cam Clay and Soft Soil Creep models can be applied to evaluate primary and secondary consolidation behavior.
Key Points
Evaluate Settlement with 1D Terzaghi Consolidation
Understand how settlement, degree of consolidation, and time-settlement curves can be calculated for soft cohesive soil under staged embankment loading.
Compare Classical Theory with Nonlinear FEM Analysis
Learn the key differences between 1D Terzaghi consolidation and FEM-based nonlinear consolidation, including drainage direction, changing soil properties, geometry update, stress history, pore pressure, and strain behavior.
Capture Long-Term Settlement and Secondary Consolidation
See how advanced constitutive models such as Modified Cam Clay and Soft Soil Creep help simulate settlement behavior over time, including continued creep settlement after primary consolidation is complete.
