Description
This session addresses one of the key challenges in working with existing buildings: understanding how they will actually perform during an earthquake. Drawing on his experience with both new and existing structures, including heritage buildings, Andrè Mangion walks through the seismic performance assessment of a real project.
The core of the session focuses on pushover analysis and how it is applied in practice to evaluate the capacity of an existing structure. It explains how the analysis is set up for the case study and what it reveals about the building’s behaviour as seismic demand increases.
The final part concentrates on interpreting the results, showing how the outcomes of the pushover analysis are used to identify structural vulnerabilities and inform decisions on the building’s assessment. The session closes with a live Q&A.
Key Points
Real case study: seismic performance assessment of an existing structure, based on practical project experience.
Pushover analysis in practice: how the analysis is applied to evaluate the structural capacity of existing buildings.
Interpreting results: understanding pushover outcomes to identify structural vulnerabilities, including in conservation and heritage contexts.
