This session explores a practical top-down modelling approach for deep excavation projects, focusing on how staged construction, support systems, groundwater drawdown, and soil–structure interaction influence excavation performance. Through a 2D deep excavation model in MIDAS GTS NX, we demonstrate how retaining walls, king posts, struts, anchors, and interface elements can be activated step by step to reflect the actual construction sequence. The session also highlights the use of coupled stress–seepage analysis to assess wall deformation, structural forces, formation heave, settlement behavior, pore pressure changes, and seepage effects. Participants will gain practical guidance on building a realistic excavation model and interpreting key results for safe and reliable underground construction analysis.

Description
In this session, we will present a top-down modelling approach for deep excavation projects, focusing on a 2D plane strain excavation model that reflects a realistic staged construction sequence. The model includes retaining walls, king posts, struts, ground anchors, interface elements, and staged groundwater drawdown to represent the key mechanisms involved in deep excavation works.
The session will highlight the construction stage sequence from initial stress generation to final excavation, including support installation, dewatering stages, and coupled stress–seepage analysis. Attendees will gain practical insight into how MIDAS GTS NX can be used to evaluate wall deflection, bending moments, axial forces in supports, basal heave, ground settlement, pore pressure distribution, and soil–structure interaction for safe and reliable deep excavation analysis.
Key Points
Stage-by-Stage Top-Down Excavation ModellingExplore how the top-down construction sequence can be simulated through staged excavation, support installation, and progressive activation of structural elements.
Coupled Stress–Seepage Analysis with DewateringUnderstand how groundwater drawdown, pore pressure changes, and seepage effects can be considered together with stress analysis during deep excavation stages.
Soil–Structure Interaction with Retaining SystemsLearn how retaining walls, king posts, struts, ground anchors, and interface elements work together to represent realistic interaction between the ground and support system.
Excavation Performance and Stability EvaluationSee how MIDAS GTS NX can be used to evaluate wall deflection, bending moments, support axial forces, basal heave, settlement behavior, pore pressure distribution, and overall excavation stability.
