    Session Overview

Spatially variable ground motion (SVGM), the difference in seismic excitation across a bridge's supports, can go unaccounted for in conventional analysis, understating demand on long or multi span bridges by 30% or more.

The updated Eurocode 8 Part 2 introduces clear criteria for when this must be addressed, and a simplified method to account for it without a full spatial ground motion analysis. Prof. Anastasios Sextos, who sits on the Eurocode drafting committee behind these provisions, walks through the new decision framework, the simplified method, and validation against real instrumented bridges.

Learn when the new EN1998–2 provisions require spatial variability analysis in bridge design, and how to apply them without a full simulation.

    Who Should Attend
    • Bridge and structural engineers designing under Eurocode 8, especially those working on long span, multi span, or geologically complex projects across Europe.

    • Engineers early in their career who want to build expertise on the updated EN1998 provisions before they become standard practice on live projects.

    • Senior engineers and technical leads who need to assess how the code change affects current project workflows, tools, and compliance timelines.

    Learning Objectives

📌When Does EN1998–2 Require Spatial Variability Analysis?

Use the updated decision criteria to determine whether your current or upcoming project requires SVGM analysis.

📌How Does the New Method Change Your Design Workflow?

Understand how the updated provisions affect analysis scope and effort, including cases where a simplified approach can be applied efficiently.

📌What Does Real Bridge Data Say About Spatial Variability?

See how the new provisions hold up against recorded data from instrumented bridges under actual seismic events with the Evripos bridge in Greece etc.

    Good to Know

What is spatially variable ground motion in bridge design?
    - It is the difference in seismic excitation experienced across a bridge's supports, and a key factor in seismic risk for long or multi span bridges.

When does Eurocode 8 require SVGM analysis?
    - The updated EN1998–2 introduces clear criteria based on bridge length and soil conditions for when this must be addressed.

Does applying the new method mean redoing the underlying analysis yourself?
    -  No. here is what is involved:

    1. Identify the vibration modes most affected by asynchronous excitation
    2. Apply established amplification factors through two added static analyses
    3. Combine these with a standard analysis, at roughly the same effort
