1. What is a cable-stayed bridge?
A cable-stayed bridge is a type of bridge that installs one or more main towers in the middle of the bridge and connects the main tower to the girder segments with cables. The shape of the main tower, the shape of the girder, and the arrangement of the cables can be freely designed in a cable-stayed bridge. This allows for the application of various structural systems. For example, adjusting the tension of the cable forces can reduce the bending moment of the girder. This enables a more economical design. Additionally, by planning various cable arrangements and shapes for the main tower, a more aesthetically pleasing bridge design suitable for the surrounding environment can be achieved. However, despite various structural advantages, only a few cable-stayed bridges were designed and constructed in the past due to limitations in materials and construction methods.
