Description
This session focuses on a specialized technical challenge in structural engineering: evaluating how masonry buildings behave under seismic loading. It starts by discussing how to select a suitable modelling approach for masonry structures and what that choice means for the reliability of the results.
The walkthrough in MIDAS GEN NX then builds the model step by step, defining the building geometry, stories and grids, and assigning masonry walls, beams and floor elements together with support and connection conditions. Load combinations and the response spectrum are set up before running modal and response spectrum analyses on the model.
The final part shows how to interpret the analysis results and assess the seismic performance of the building. Dr. Uzdil draws on examples from his own published research on traditional masonry buildings and historic structures, showing how the numerical workflow translates into practical performance evaluation.
Key Points
Masonry modelling approach: choosing the right modelling strategy and correctly defining geometry, stories, grids, walls, beams, floors, and connection conditions.
Seismic analysis workflow: setting up load combinations and the response spectrum, then running modal and response spectrum analyses in MIDAS GEN NX.
Performance assessment in practice: interpreting results and evaluating seismic performance, supported by case studies from published research.

Speaker
He has published extensively in international Q1 and Q2 journals, as well as in book chapters and conference proceedings. His work combines modal, response-spectrum and pushover analyses with practical numerical modelling, including case studies of traditional masonry buildings, historic schools, mosques, and timber–masonry structures.
