Introduction

Here's the key insights from our recent webinar on creating a stress-recast bridge in a highly seismic region of Greece. In this webinar, we explored the use of MIDAS Civil software to design a resilient bridge capable of withstanding seismic forces and ensuring passenger safety. The project was undertaken by Cappa, a Greek multi-disciplined engineering consultancy known for its expertise in civil and structural engineering. Let's delve into the details of this fascinating bridge design journey.

The webinar was led by a bridge engineering expert with 22 years of experience in the field. Having graduated from the University of Surrey in England, this seasoned professional has been involved in various projects, including local and international endeavors, specializing in complex bridge structures.

Description

The Bridge - Location and Challenges:

The bridge, situated in the seismic region of Peloponnese, Greece, near Kalamata, presented significant engineering challenges. Spanning approximately 93 meters with a width of 12 meters, the bridge was intended to cross a river, making its seismic resilience a top priority.

Modeling the Bridge:

The design process began by defining material properties and section properties to accurately model the bridge using MIDAS Civil software. Tandem properties for deck and piers were also incorporated to create a PSC composite bridge effectively.

Time-Dependent Properties:

To account for the creep and time-dependent behavior during construction stages, the team precisely defined time-dependent properties. Enforcement was applied to the cross-section of the deck, ensuring structural stability.

Loadings and Analysis:

Various loadings, such as moving loads, construction loads, and response spectrum for earthquake analysis, were considered. The team performed a thorough analysis to check the results for combination reactions, moving tracer vibration mode, and losses.

Creating Reports and PSC Design:

Detailed reports and PSC design for the bridge were generated using the software. The bridge's critical sections were checked for bending strength, compressive strength, and stability, ensuring compliance with design codes and safety standards.

Modeling Structural Interaction:

To incorporate the foundation and pile of the bridge, the team used AutoCAD's DXF file, simulating the bridge using elastic and rigid links for realistic behavior during analysis.

Conclusion

The webinar provided an in-depth understanding of the intricate process of designing a resilient bridge in a highly seismic region. The use of advanced software and meticulous analysis techniques ensures that the final bridge design meets all safety and regulatory standards. Cappa's expertise and dedication to excellence make them a reputable choice for engineering consultancy in the civil and structural engineering industry.
