Do you know how composite sections are modeled in midas Civil and  how the stresses for a composite section are calculated?

The use of composite sections has increased with the increase in spans of bridges over time. However, there is still ambiguity related to the property definition, consideration, and stress/ force output for composite sections. It is very important to understand how time-dependent effects are considered for composite sections and how they affect the section properties and finally the stress and force results of composite sections.

Through this eBook, you can learn various ways in which composite section properties can be defined in Midas civil. This book also covers, how time-dependent properties are considered for composite sections as well as how part-wise stresses are calculated for girder and slab is discussed with an example.

Key Points

1. Introduction

Composite sections are widely used in modern construction due their advantages discussed above.

In this guide we briefly discussed various options available for definition of composite sections.
We also saw three different methods to simulate time dependent effects in composite sections in midas Civil.

Out of these three methods method A where time dependent properties as well as construction stage analysis is considered is the most accurate way to find the time dependent effects in composite sections. The other two methods are approximate approaches.

For composite section it is important to investigate the part-wise forces and moments to ensure safe
design of the section. These can be obtained in midas Civil. We also saw with example how part wise
stresses and forces can be obtained from the total forces on the section
