Q&A Highlights

Tech Q1. Can data from other structural software be exported directly to GTS NX?

A. Yes, it can be exported to GTS NX via 'Load Excel Export/Import' function in GTS NX

Tech Q2. How are resulting "structural" forces in volumetric piles obtained. Is there an option to automatically integrate stresses in a volume to obtain N, M and Q?

A. MIDAS GTS NX has 3 options namely 'Virtual beam', 'Gauging Shell', and 'Local Direction Force Sum' methods to determine the Axial Force, Shear forces, and Bending moment from volumetric elements.

Tech Q3. This question is maybe off topic, but can you also determine the point of failure with this software? For e.g. can you create a simulation when adding stress or burden on an element and then get the point of failure?

A. Yes, that is possible. You can run a Stress Analysis with multiple load steps. When the model is failing, the solution will start to diverge. Then we can find the result until the point of failure.

Tech Q4. The thicnkess of pile interface is equal to D=Diameter of pile or 3.14xD=circumference?

A. Yes. It can be that value. But in general, this thickness value is directly connected with the calculation of Ultimate Shear force. In general, Ultimate Shear Force = Ultimate Shaft Resistance/(length of the pile*Pile thickness) In this model, I have considered the pile thickness as 1m. So, if you inputted the pile thickness as the circumference, then ultimate shear force value need to be updated accordingly.

Tech Q5. How to model pile element according to a pile load test?

A. The detailed procedure is given in the help manual and is as follows, For example, if a load of 1000kN was found before failure from the pile loading test and the pile length was 10m, the Ultimate shear force is [1000kN/10m/1m] = 100kN/m2. Here, the 1m is the unit length of the input pile element thickness. The Shear stiffness modulus is the slope of the linear section on the relationship graph with relative displacement until the 1000kN load is applied. If we assume that the relative displacement at 1000kN is 0.01m, the Shear stiffness modulus becomes [100kN/m2 / 0.01m] = 10000kN/m3.
