Depending on the purpose, a bridge can be planned in various shapes. To enable a large amount of transportation, a bridge designer can apply several design considerations to a bridge design. Let’s look at one of them.
A double-layer bridge provides more space through the double-layer girder to transport vehicles, trains, or pedestrians. This type of girder has enough vertical clearance to carry them. Therefore, it could make clearance issues under the bridge, and also it could make aero stability issues. Nevertheless, the double-layer girder can be one of the available options for a bridge in areas where heavy traffic is expected.

Chenab Bridge is being constructed over the Chenab River in the Himalayas. This arch-shaped steel bridge will become the world's highest railway bridge, with a total height of 359 m (1178 ft.) above the river, 35 m taller than the Eiffel Tower. It will connect Baramulla to Jammu.

In 2016, Kolkata witnessed a major steel bridge failure of the Vivekananda Road Flyover during construction which led to 27 deaths and 50 injured. The construction work of a 2.2km flyover began in 2009 and was expected to be completed in 2010. Although six years behind schedule, it was not yet completed the erection part till 2016 (Figure 1).

The geometric properties of sections, which are indicators of the structural performance and load resistance capacity of sections, are characterized by the section shape and dimensions, regardless of material properties. These section properties are needed to calculate the bending/shear stresses, deflections, strength, and buckling, which are essential factors for the overall structural design of bridges.

This webinar shows a bridge design carried out in 2017 for new Composite integral bridge.The B9090 White Bridge Replacement project was commissioned by The Highland Council, Designed by AECOM and constructed by RJ McLeod. The replacement bridge was commission to bypass a Category A Listed stone bridge, which was built in the early 1750. The new bridge is a 40m span integral steel/concrete composite structure designed to support the realigned B9090 over the River Nairn.
Section property must be applied when performing analysis as well as material properties. midas Civil provides 'Section Properties' function to define various section shape of structures. Section properties function has an option to define a geometry shape and to calculate section properties for the analysis. And also it has an option for the design feature in midas Civil. Therefore, you can use section properties function on your purpose.
