As structural engineers, whenever we need to analyze a complex structure, we turn to FEM (Finite Element Method) analysis for a quick solution with acceptable accuracy. The generalized beam element model is quite sufficient in most cases; however, there are a few instances in which we may need to go for detailed 3D finite element analysis. Few such cases are joint analysis, buckling analysis, material non-linear analysis, and so on. But hey, meshing even matters in simple linear analysis! Let’s have a look at the basic guidelines for meshing and the process of mesh convergence.

 When we build prestressed concrete structural members, which is a frequently used material for bridges worldwide, the benefit in material savings and reduction of dimensions is guaranteed only when it is built correctly. Structures behave the way they are built, and not the way they are designed, so it is imperative that the designer and reviewer engineers provide the necessary information so that the construction process is oriented towards a structure that meets all safety requirements.

1. Introduction

Depending on the purpose, a bridge can be planned in various shapes. To enable a large amount of transportation, a bridge designer can apply several design considerations to a bridge design. Let’s look at one of them.

A double-layer bridge provides more space through the double-layer girder to transport vehicles, trains, or pedestrians. This type of girder has enough vertical clearance to carry them. Therefore, it could make clearance issues under the bridge, and also it could make aero stability issues.
